[ The uncertain face of a young green-haired woman flicks onto the screen ]

H-hello. Um. My name is Terra. I... I'm told I did some horrible things to everyone, and I am so, so sorry. I'm, uh, I'm also really grateful that the Corsairs rescued me, and were still willing to give me a home and a chance after everything I did. I'm going to do what I can to help, so uh, it's nice to meet you. I will make it up to everyone, I promise.

Video

[A rather lovely young lady with long purple hair appears on the ENC Network video feed.]

After our last mission, I noticed some potential gaps in our communication capabilities. I've been working on some programs on the side, and I have a potential enhancement for our ENCs, if folks are interested. I developed a simple program that will allow us to ping our allies' ENCs with a variety of notifications depending on the circumstances, which can give a more immediate and informative notice. Currently, I have programmed the following notifications:

Caution
Emergency
Need Assistance
Warning
Retreat
Advance
Incoming
Mission Compromised

Would anybody be interested in utilizing this program? I can also add additional pings fairly easily, if people would like to contribute.

[Deedee's voice sounds rough, like she's been a pack a day smoker for a year and in pain on top of that. She is clearly Not Well. This may be why she's not transmitting video.]

Mission accomplished, though not without serious cost. I was foolish. If it weren't for the quick thinking of my teammates, it's likely three of us would be dead, at least. Ha... we appreciate any and all medical help you can provide, particularly to heal serious burns.

But we did succeed. And I made promises I intend to keep.

I might not be able to personally attend to people's beauty and health for a while and I'm sorry. I'm going to leave that in the capable hands of my employees until I'm well enough to do it myself; please avail yourself of the spa's services now or when I can do so at your option.

But more importantly than that, I swore a vow to my God, and I intend to follow through on it. I would like to set up a shrine to Sylphan in honor of... this victory; something open to the air with windchimes, so His presence can be heard as music. And I'm more than willing to trade favors for this favor, keeping in mind I'm in recovery.

Greetings, Crimson Corsairs.

[As usual, the elegant woman appears with a beaming smile amidst the warm steam rising from bowls of... something or other in her kitchen.]

I understand you come from many winter traditions, both in this land and in your homes. If you would allow me a brief intrusion... In Yan, it is customary to celebrate the Winter Solstice, the 'dong zhi.' As it is the longest night of the year, we give thanks that the light will return and the days will soon grow long once more. In the depths of midwinter, it is a reminder that balance and yang will be restored, no matter how dark the nights may seem. For those of us in agrarian communities, we give thanks also to the animals who have brought us through the hard times.

[A mischievous glimmer shines in her eyes.]

Of course, it is also the day that the venerable master of the stove, Zao Jun, reports to Tian on whether or not your house hold has been 'naughty' or 'nice,' which I understand is a part of some other traditions as well.

Please allow me to offer prayers to Tian on your behalf. What is it that you hope for when the sun returns in its full splendor?

[in person, all around]

[Shu appears at your door on this cold, long winter evening, knocking politely and awaiting an answer. Whether she sought you out specifically or whether she's never met you at all, she stands and waits in her warm coat holding an extraordinarily large soup bowl in her hands. Somehow, it does not seem to trouble her.]

Greetings.

I have been taking my time to assimilate and to analyze the situation I found myself in once freed from the chains of the life that had been forced upon me. The breaker of my chains, I owe a debt to, though I suspect it will be paid in fellowship and in teamwork. A fine repayment, though I will still consider the value of pizza.

My name is Korobase Oki, or Oki Korobase to my friends and allies who use the nomenclature. (That was not an easy word  in this language to learn...) Before being used for hauling freight and stacking crates and other... delightful menial tasks, my training and experience involved being a very sharp set of eyes and ears. Eyes sharp enough to pierce a hard target cleanly at 2km. Ears sharp enough to hear the whispers that the rich and powerful said to the empty darkness that they thought a deaf and uncomprehending witness. My operations were normally on a paid basis, of course, being a professional, but this... This is a rebellion, a fight against the grasping epauletted claws of an empire that would clasp all to it in chains, to what end, I care not. Let my pay be the freedom of those they oppress and proper retribution against those who would dare bind my wings.

But first, a drink.

Senshi here with an announcement the old hands were likely looking forward to, and that I know the new folk will find interesting.

With the weather turning colder, sea monsters - leviathans, kraken, and the like - are gonna start getting hungry and ornery, fattening themselves up so they can sleep through the worst of the cold.

In typical Flotsam fashion, we made this problem into a solution: the annual monster hunt and winter feast.

What can I say? Leviathans and Kraken both are good eatin' - Leviathan tastes something like a cross between fatty tuna and a good beefsteak, while kraken meat is great in takoyaki, steamed in a light vinegar sauce, or in a king-sized calamari fritta. That's why we've been making them the guests of honor for our winter feasts, the star of the show and the center of the table.

Which isn't to say that we aren't going to need a whole bunch of supporting cast for this performance - it's our last chance to put on a really good feast before we need to start leaning on pickled, salted and jarred food for the winter.

I plan to participate in the hunt, of course, but I'm also planning to cook up a huge storm. And, well, for prey and a job this big, I can't do it alone.

Who'd care to join me in making this a hunt and feast to remember?

[The green-skinned teenager clears his throat once the recorder is activated, doing his best to look professional about this.]

Greetings, fellow Corsairs. The name is Donatello- otherwise and more commonly known as and referred to as Donnie.

For those of you who know me, I am a bit of a tinkerer and help out with things in the Armory. As an ongoing project I've been testing out a different design for the ENC- that is the Ether Network Communicators, which allows for hands to be free while making use of communications. Perhaps you've already seen me using my own.

[He holds a finger up before the visuals shift a bit as he moves, or rather the communicator is, showing his other hand and the gauntlet-like device he holds.]

This is what my current device looks like. It can be worn on either forearm, and basically...

[The video blurs again as he has to move his other hand to flip up the cover, but soon it shows the device again, showing the similar features of your standard ENC, nestled between almost artfully placed conductors.]

The ether stone is here, and allows for quicker, consistent charging since the device is in contact with you. This is the screen, and this is the QWERTY input, and this is where audio is both received and projected.

[He holds it there for a moment before flipping it closed with his thumb, setting it somewhere aside as the feed itself shifts back to the turtlekin-teen who all at once looks a bit shy then.]

Um. So... Basically I am offering to upgrade devices if anyone is interested. I think it would be especially useful during missions, although I can't guarantee that I'll have a lot ready before whenever our next one may be. Materials for such are easier to acquire so production won't be a problem.

I do have to stress that just because it is shaped like a piece of armor, I do not suggest making use of it as such. While it's sturdy enough to take a hit, the components it houses are more fragile. Not irreplaceable, but it's better to avoid the problem if you can. ....I....am getting ahead of myself again, aren't I.

Uh, Donnie out.

[And his free hand reaches over to cut the transmission.]

[It’s been a few months since Nephenee’s been tugged into this world, but up til now, she’s…kinda done what she tends to do when in new situations, and that is focus on her job, and hermit. She’s not really introduced herself to many, mostly staying in the back and occasionally piping up when needed, always in practical clothing and under a hat obscuring her face in some shadow, like she’s trying to hide, and doing her job of taking care of critters and beating up people that need beating up. She certainly hasn’t introduced herself on the network or to the Corsairs at large.

After this last planning and execution cycle, though? She’s gotten her armour back, and her best lance (among some other things), and it’s helped her to regain some confidence (Mostly because they’re a security blanket of sorts…). She’s practiced for this, and wants to finally try to get to know people!

When the feed comes on, the first sight for folks is the wooden ceiling above, then the camera quickly wiggling around as she tries to center the view. When the woman does get it to show her, they’ll see a cabin like that in Flotsam dotted here and there with flowers in pots, light filtering in from a window off-screen. A tall, lovely, lean-muscled woman in
armour with fair skin & long green hair covered by the helm obscuring part of her face sits there, a possibly familiar shield against the wall behind her to the right, and two polearms on the wall, a metal one that looks like the head’s been broken off, and a regal halberd. She gives a small bow with her head and upper torso like she’s seen Shu and others back home do. Right…she can do this!

When she speaks, it’s with some hesitance, and with a soft, warm, sweet voice like warm apple pie that sounds like a mixture of country and something like the Chūgoku dialect of Japan, sort of like someone from Hiroshima? But also a little like the Carolinas in the States. It's an odd mixture.
]

H-Hi, everyone. Um, apologies for…not introducin’ myself ‘fore now…lot goin’ on, ya know?

[A lot of shyness and turtling, more like (no offense intended to our resident turtlekin, of course).]

Um, Ah’m Nephenee, from Crimea, on the continent o’Tellius…Ah’m a Sentinel an’ guard under Her Majesty, Queen Elincia, an’ Ah’m stationed in Flotsam. [Belatedly, she realizes her own title may not be translating properly.] Er, that is…Sorry, not used to the words here yet. Um, Sentinels are…uh, Ah think it got described to me as Elite Lancers who stride battlefields with calm an' surety?

[She’s underselling the first word; it’s better translated “Legendary”. But regardless, the calm and surety part is in direct opposition to her presentation and how she feels.]

A-Anyway, Ah’m lookin’ for folks to train with, an’ learn new stuff from? There’s…a lotta stuff here Ah ain’t used to, an’ Ah’d like to learn how to do more stuff, an’ how to defend against all this stuff Ah ain’t used to. Um, Ah have a bow, too, but Ah’m not as good with that. Um, my first halberd here broke [She hooks a thumb back at that broken polearm], so if anyone's...good at hand-to-hand, Ah'd sure like to know how to do that...

Um, also…Ah’d…like to get to know folks? Ah’m also a farmer back home, so…Ah know a lot ‘bout plants an’ animals, an’ things like cookin’ an’...other country stuff. [She rubs that back of her neck mentioning that, eyes that look to be perhaps green darting away for a moment, but presses on.] Like…cookin’ an’ bakin’ an’ makin’ stuff. Um, Ah also like tea, have a buncha blends o’it already…an’...um, Ah’d…like to have folks over for tea or lunch some time?

[She’s kind of hit her limit, now, so the rest comes out a bit too fast.]

A-Anyway, A-Ah look forward to meetin’ an’ gettin’ to know all y’all!

[And she hurriedly turns off the feed, flustered and muttering in another language about her poor grammar and word choices.]

Why are you fighting the Empire?

I'm not questioning your cause I just want to know. Millions of people live average lives in the Empire without wondering why things are the way they are.

What did they do to you that made it so you can't rest anymore?

Crimson Corsairs.

[The transmitter displays a horned woman in loose-fitting robes with her hands clasped together. Her expression solemn, she sinks into a deep bow. Though this sort of long-distance communication was possible in Terra, she has personally never used a communicator with a visual display. Her tones are as precise and formal as if she were giving a prepared speech.]

I am Shu. I extend my sincere gratitude to all who aided in the recent liberation of the laborers of the Hesaeth mining camp. And so, too, to all whose contributions to the activities of the Corsairs made such an event possible, big or small.

'A drop of water must be repaid by a rushing spring.' I do not incur debts lightly. Allow me to begin to make recompense. If you are in the vicinity of Vault, please call upon me after noon today that we may share a meal.

[The transmitter slides over to reveal a table covered with baskets and baskets of vegetables and grains, herbs and cuts of meat. Everything is glistening as if just plucked off the vine, no matter how unlikely that may be. The small stove in the background is quietly doing its best to support four burners going simultaneously, pumping out copious amounts of steam.]

If you are not, we will meet another day. But do introduce yourselves. I would know more about each of you -- and about this land.

[in person, in Vault]

[The dormitory she has been assigned is not large enough to accommodate any significant number of guests. She has requisitioned a long banquet table and a dozen chairs from somewhere and set up shop outside of the housing facility. ...She probably needed some sort of permit for this, but oh well.

Set along the table are a dozen dishes composed of anything she could get her hands on, a feast of late summer produce showcasing vivid colors and sumptuous plating in the Yan style. Gently simmered fish bathes in the aroma of ginger and soy, marbled cuts of pork so delicate they seem to quiver gently as they settle into a thick sauce, a dish that offsets the deep aubergine of eggplant with brilliant scarlet peppers and verdant leaves of some brassica subspecies, a mound of rice tossed with garlic and shallots and plump selections of river crayfish, and on and on...]
